Botanical name: Withania somnifera
The history of India's traditional medical system, Ayurveda, dates back to 6000 BC (Charak Samhita, 1949). Ashwagandha has been utilised as a Rasayana (meaning "that which supports rasa," or life essence) throughout the majority of these 6000 years. Ashwagandha root is considered a stimulant, tonic, aphrodisiac, narcotic, diuretic, anthelmintic, astringent, and thermogenic.
People have been using ashwagandha's orange-red fruit and roots for medicinal purposes for hundreds of years. The word "ashwagandha," which means "like a horse," refers to the scent of the root. Ashwa is synonymous with horse.
As a natural remedy that can boost immunity and lower cortisol levels in the body in response to stress, ashwagandha is regarded as an adaptogen.
Studies have indicated that the herb's naturally occurring component triethylene glycol may help promote sleep.
