Botanical name: Cannabis sativa cv.
Hemp seeds are a nutrient-dense plant-based protein source that may improve digestion and heart health. Cannabis sativa, or hemp plant, produces hemp seeds.
They belong to the same species as cannabis (marijuana), but in a distinct variety.
However, they only contain minimal levels of THC, the intoxicating chemical found in cannabis.
Hemp seeds are very nutritious, containing healthy fats, protein, and minerals. Hemp husks, also known as hulls, are the outer coating of hemp seeds and are regarded a highly fermentable source of fibre.
Unlike other fibre sources like hay and grass, highly fermentable fibres are complex carbohydrates with high quantities of cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin that are easily digested by the bacteria in the hindgut. However, they contain significantly less non-digestible lignin.
